Veterans Day

Not everyone may know that Signet is a Veteran-owned Small Business. Through our employees and family, we represent the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines. We take great pride in our country and the soldiers, airmen, sailors, Marines, and Coast Guard that fought and continue to fight for this great nation. With Veteran’s Day approaching, we want to honor them and remind ourselves of the history of Veterans Day.

Originally known as Armistice Day, Nov 11th was originally set as a U.S. Holiday to celebrate the end of WWI in 1918 (although the legislation wasn’t passed until 1938). It was dedicated to the cause of world peace. In 1954, after the Korean War and WWII, veteran service organizations urged Congress to amend the Act of 1938 and changed it to Veteran’s Day to honor all American veterans of all wars. Although the date was changed to coincide with a three-day weekend, in 1975, Gerald Ford signed a law that returned the original observance to Nov 11th annually.

Additionally, a resolution was passed in 2001 to declare “National Veterans Awareness Week.” The resolution calls for educational efforts directed at elementary and secondary school students concerning the contributions and sacrifices of veterans. As President Eisenhower stated in 1954, “It is my earnest hope that all veterans, their organizations, and the entire citizenry will join hands to insure proper and widespread observance of this day. I have every confidence that our Nation will respond wholeheartedly in the appropriate observance of Veterans Day.”
